Brief Early History:

The village of Monroeville was platted in 1852 by Jacob and John Barnhart in anticipation of the railroad which was built in 1854.  For the first 10 years, it existed primarily as a mail station stop on the railroad.  After the start of the Civil War, the town experienced rapid growth due to an increase in the trade and manufacturing of barrel staves and headings for oil refineries and other wood products.  Monroeville was incorporated as a town in 1866.
